YUMMY CHOCOLATE!! Petcha Kutcha

I choose to present my petcha kutcha over chocolate, we were asked to do it over something we have a passion for and I have a very big passion for chocolate! (hehe) I love chocolate, it always makes me feel better when I get to eat it and I love to make desserts that have chocolate in them. I got to thinking about I love chocolate so much but I don't really know where it grows, what country it started in, how its made etc, so I wanted to take this oppournuntiy to research about it so I can know more.

I also was able to record my petcha kutcha in voicethread

Second life: confusion

Alan Hudson is the senior lecture at London Metropolitan University he has been doing a lot of work lately with elearning and he has been doing a lot of teaching with second life.

My most significant take away from this video was that Alan has been having a problem with elearning because the students have to become familiar with the system of elearning before they can even begin learning. There isn't a very good way to learn about second life, the orientation is somewhat confusing and sometimes people don't even make it pass the orientation before giving up. There is a program that has exact replicas of some areas in London so people can familiarize themselves with London through that way of learning. They are working hard to find a way to make second life easier to navigate and I think that is great that individuals want to help others in that way.

I have never got a chance to use second life, it looks very interesting. People seem to really like this program, and think it's fun. I think it can be used in a way that can be good and educational.

I think I would use Second Life in my classroom, as long as I could teach it in an educational way. I think my students would get a lot from using second life, social skills, cognitive growth, problem solving skills etc. I think this video is great because it is people trying to find different solutions to make students and people learn second life easier and better. I really hope to have that kind of attitude with my classroom, to want to find a solution to make learning fun and easier.

Google Doc Survey

I recently created a google doc survey, I would love to see your response!

Who is your favorite actor or actress?

To date only one person has responded to it saying that Reese Witherspoon is their favorite actress.

UPDATE: Only three people were able to respond to my survey but I like both the actresses and actor they choose!

Sam and her love for technology

This digital youth portrait was over Sam, Sam loves the computer she even stated that if she wasn't in school she would be spending up to 12 hours on the computer. Her teachers think she is really creative, they have a lot of faith in her that she will succeed. Sam looks at technology as a trial and error type of thing, she doesn't give up if she doesn't get it the first time, she just goes back and tries something different. She has a good attitude for learning new things.

Sam uses media on a lot of her projects which sets her apart from the rest of her peers and giver her an interesting edge. She loves to do other things then just media, she enjoys being outside which is a good combo to have. But then again she loves being on the computer, she can create things, she can be a different person. She likes playing video games but she uses them to help her learn problem solving. Her friends think she is creative to.

I hope to have the attitude when I become a teacher like Sam's educator and parents. They don't look at world of war craft as a video game they look at it as a educational game, it is helping her build social skills and problem solving. Just because something is fun doesn't mean it is educational.

Parallel Play

This video was about Paula White and the title was Parallel Play or Collaboration–Leveraging the Wiki Platform for High Quality Work. She created a wiki space for her students and other and everything she shared is on this wiki.

She has been using wiki's for 3 years. She started this all because of a blog that she asked for other to share with her wikis that showed true collaboration real thinking for the kids. She wanted to involved students more deeply in learning. she got online and looked at examples of wikis's to find how people feel about wiki's. She found a few on collaboration but none for the students. She stated that wikis help engage students. She also expressed that students have to want to blog and wiki about certain things, you can't push them. You need to motivate them, give them something that they care about so that they can be engaged more authentically.

Wikis are definitely motivating I think they can be a very powerful tool to involve students. This video can connect with my experience in many ways. Ms. White wants to motivated children in her classroom and on the web, and I think that is very important when teaching students. She also wants to create something that will help them learn. Her students were excited by how she presented the wiki's. She explained using wikis and helped me have a better understanding.

I hope to use wikis in my classroom someday, one of her students did a wiki over a math assignment and by doing that she gained more than if she were to just do the assignment. I think that by encouraging students to do things outside their box you are preparing them for future challenges.

Dorothy and Her fun Digital Path.

This was a very cute video in the theme of the wizard of OZ, except it was called the Wizard of Apps. I enjoyed watching it, it is 50 minutes long but I promise it is worth it.

In this video Mrs. Valenza seems like she is a librarian and Dorothy comes into the library she wants to be a good digital citizen. she talks about pipl.com which is a semantic search, when you search pipl you can see your profile, pictures etc. It is extremely important to use safety on facebook and myspace. the age group on facebook and myspace is getting younger and younger, we need to teach our youth to use safety, they are more vulnerable and more at risk. i thought it was really great how she talked about the website thatsnotcool.com where kids can start discussing the importance of privacy online. Dorothy meets the scarecrow where he is writing a paper and doesn't know if he citing correctly. She then goes on to dicuss researching on the Internet. She then fins the Tin man, who is having a hard time doing a presentation, they want to do it powerfully and make it great. Mrs Valenza then talk about apps that involve creativity and innovation. They then all find the lion who is having communication issues, he is nervous about presenting a project to a large crowd. Mrs. Valenza discusses communication and collaboration. In the end Mrs. Valenza (who is Glenda the good witch) tells the students they don't need to see the wizard of apps, they have everything they need.

This video connects with my own experiences in many ways. I used to have a hard time finding the right research engine for my research papers, so I know how the scarecrow feels. I hope to create a video or project like Mrs. Valenza someday that will help my students excel in all digital areas.

I visited the "playing with images" link and got to see flickr and got to explore how to use copyright-friendly websites. In all the years that I have been using the Internet I never realized how each image I see had to have come from some where, and it is really important to respect the owner and use the copyright correctly.

My VoiceThread!

The following is the VoiceThread I created about loving summer!! I hope you enjoy it!

Digiteens: Researching everything

Digiteens are a group of students who have been researching current topics over the last few years things like safety, bullying, addictive behavior, all kinds of things that include digital citizenship. I didn't know that driving while texting killed more people than driving under the influence a year. It amazes me that driving while texting effects peoples reaction time just as much as driving under the influence. 37% of all car wrecks are caused by DWT.

I found the research of the Digital safety was interesting, these girls stated that Internet safety is so important to days, with younger people being involved in things like myspace and facebook, they could have sexual predators looking at their pictures so make sure its set to private. They talked about other things like having your identity stolen and creating a Sims world.

As a teacher I hope to one day involve my students in digital citizenship education. I think it will help them grow as a student, and they can gain a better
understanding about things they love!

Kelly's OVERSIZED Truth

I chose Kelly's story from independent learning project by students, her story was about obesity. Her story stated that over 1 billion American adults were overweight. She said that 32% of adults were obese which I didn't know. I knew that obesity can have an effect on your health I just didn't know how much, it can cause diabetes, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction's, strokes, kidney failure and numerous others. That's why I think it is so important to be healthy now days, I want to teach my kids to have healthy lifestyles, but it needs to start with me!

Project Based Learning

The video that I just watched was about real students from all over collaborating in hands on real world projects, all of the students have on thing in common they are all gaining knowledge on the digital age, and they are all excited about learning.

Here's the video check it out!

This video is has so many different stories of students do different project, on class is designing a building meant for the year 2050, another class is researching on a disease one of the students has. All of the schools are using project based learning. One class does a big project where they research, then take field trips together to gather information, then they give an oral presentation on the subject. They can use digital slide shows, or a board with pictures and information on it to show what they have learned.

This connects with my life because I was in an organization in high school called, National History Day. You would choose a topic, research it, then present it with a annotated bibliography to a panel of judges. When you present it you could choose to present it on a board, in a video, or in an presentation. The knowledge I gained while i did these projects has helped me tremendously, in being able to write a paper, in presenting something to individuals, and in using different digital sources.

I would use project based learning in my classroom. I would love to help students be apart of National History Day when I get to be a teacher, maybe I could be a sponsor or a volunteer. I would really love to be a sponsor for any after school activitie that helps students understand something more, even if I don't know the organization it would be so good for me to learn new things and then hopefully I can teach that to my students.

ohhhh summer how I miss you...

I love summer and everything that comes along with it(maybe not the super HOT summer days)So that's why I wanted to do my tell a story in 5 pictures about summer. I miss summer especially with this cold weather we have been having, and doing this project just made me miss it more :)

my family and boyfriend are farmers so seeing an open field, ready for harvest always makes me think of summer.

The next thing that makes me think of summer are flowers, beautiful flowers, here is a sunflower.

Another activitie that I love about summer is swimming.

One of my favorite summer smells is a fresh mowed lawn!

And finally the last reason I love summer is because the fourth of July! My Grandma and Grandpa always have a big fish fry and my whole family comes, it is always so much fun.

Luis: using technology to give back to others

This video is about Luis, he is 18 years old and lives in Cornelius,Oregon. Here is the hyperlink to the website, I hope to one day be able to insert the video right into the blog post, but hey i'm still learning!

My take away from this video is learning something new about Luis and how he uses technology. He loves technology because it is a better way to connect with family and friends. He loves using technology to improve his studies, and to find out information quickly. He tries to use the technology to better his community not just for himself. His favorite sites are YouTube, facebook, and cnet. He talks about how his parents don't really ever use technology except at the ATM. He is apart of an after school program called the Tech Wizards. It is an after school tied mentoring program that introduces under represented youth to education pathways and to career in science technology engineering and math. He also does a project where he observes trees and then reports back then to the city. He also works with students, and building Lego robotics. At the end of his video his mom spoke, and she said that she told him with your hard work, your dreams will come true. How true that is, if you work hard enough anything is possible.

I love to help the community when I can, but Luis is doing an amazing job! I think out of all the videos I have watched so far he is definitely the most giving with his knowledge of technology.

I hope to teach me students in my future classroom about helping others. I am sure that some of my students will be very good at some things when they are older, I hope that I can influence them into giving back to others with that knowledge.

A peek at classroom 9

This video helped me take away a lot of great teaching strategies using the computer. The video is based in Nelson, New Zealand and it was over Rachel Boyd's room nine class. The video was a "peek for a week" over her classroom routines and oral language. They also were working on listening and speaking, and narrative writing. The classroom also learned about the usual reading, maths, inquiry learning, and music as well as physical fitness. The classroom has a blog that they use as a learning experience and love feedback from people. They also have a classroom wiki or what they call the "learning hub"

I found it interesting that the students had jobs that they had to do every week involving the blog. One of the jobs in is counting how many people have visited the blog. So they are using reading skills to find the number and then math skills to post the number in the classroom. Another thing that is a wonderful way to help students learn is they use it for their speaking and listening subject. Each student gets up and speaks to the class about something they did over the weekend, or during the week. The students can use the interactive white board to show a picture that they took of what they did over the weekend! They also use the computer to watch a news article on a New Zealand news website.

Ideas given in this video are some that I would absolutely use in my classroom. Ms. Boyd used technology in almost every aspect of her teaching and her students seemed to love it. This video definitely gave me some new ideas on how to connect the Internet with everyday classroom subjects.

Bullying is a serious problem.

This is another blog that I have been reading about Bullying. I am not sure if it is from a students perspective or a teachers. Either way it is very interesting. The comments others have left are insightful. They talk about how they are bullied and what they are trying to do to stop it. I think that with my chosen profession (early childhood education) it is really important for me to be aware of bullying, in the classroom and outside of it. I hope to learn a lot more from these students as they continue on their quest to stop bullying.

Here is the blog if you are interested.

*Look whats happeing in room 102*

I have started reading this blog as one of the required blogs I can read. They are a class of 20 second grade students living in Quebec, Canada. Most of them started their Kindergarten year speaking only in French. Now they can speak English, too. I commented on one of the blogs they had about playing in the snow. I told how Oklahoma just had snow as well over christmas. The teacher gives most of the blog updates but talks mainley about the students and her classroom. I am looking forward to reading more from these 2nd graders!

Here is the blog if you want to check it out!

Nafiza and the Global Kids

I recently watched a Digital Youth Portrait over Nafiza.

Nafiza's story was really cool in the fact that she started off by saying that she uses technology all of the time. From the point she wakes up in the morning. I think a lot of people can relate to that expecially today were most everyone has access to a cell phone, a computer, video camera, a camera. I think its cool that she is so involed in Global Kids. It seems like a really cool organization. I have never heard of second life, the program she works with but it seems like a good way to spread messages to people. Especially since her teacher puts it up on blogs afterwards.

This video connects with my life like it does most everyones life. Nafiza and her classmates are learning about computers, and the software like a lot of people are with things in this age. The video project they are doing about the injustices in the educational system is a great way to share ideas. Nafiza has taken on a leadership role to other students in helping them with their digital question, and that can relate to me in the fact that I want to help lead others in my choice of profession.

Once I am a teacher I would like to use videos like this to help inspire students to succeed. I would also like to encourage the types of orgaizations that Nafiza's is in for my students.

Buddies that Blog

I watched the following video on Blogging Buddies, and it can be found at the following web address. http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=319

My most significant take-away from this video is how much you can see the children love these blogging buddies, and the college students enjoy it too. They help each other improve writing skills, and socializing skills. So it really isn't just a learning experience for Mrs. Cassidy's class it helps Mr. Lewis' class just as much.
This video connects with my own life by helping me remember that students can learn in so many different ways. Blogging is an excellent way to improve writing and socializing skills.

Cameron the Digital Boy

My most significant take away from this video would be how technologically smart a kid can be. Children have such an amazing ability to learn, and this video proves it. I wish I was as good at digital things as this little boy was. If I as a teacher try to grow and learn from others, I can help reflect that on my future students.
This video connects with my own experience in the fact that I have been Internet friendly for most of my life, which isn't that surprising what kids aren't these days. But I still do not know as much as Cameron. He knew a lot more than just Internet functions, but all kinds of digital resources. Technology is amazing, you can teach and learn from it in so many ways.
